From North to Naples

This is a panoramic photo (compliments of friend Lilly) of the first and fastest storm I've ever witnessed rolling in from the ocean.  It was a rather phenomenal sight - the temperature literally dropped by the minute and a ferocious wind kicked up enough sand to put an abrupt end to our picnic on the beach.
Doesn't look so threatening does it?
But an hour later it's "mild" beginning... began.
Very soon after that panoramic shot we scurried back over the boardwalk in Delgor-Wiggins State Park to our vehicle and made haste, seeking refuge in Books-A-Million where the rain came down (monsoonal style) and thundered on the roof loud enough to interfere with normal conversation.
I've been happily visiting this part of Florida for many years and have never seen the likes of it.
This is a new activity for us.  I must say, we could get quite used to it except that biking at home (anywhere) is not unlike risky behaviour, living on the edge, and downright dangerous.
This, on the other hand, is not such a new activity for us.
Eeek!  The Ents have relocated!  And look at that prevailing stormy sky.
It might chase one off the beach but there is NO way to intimidate the die-hard golfer
(of the sort I am married to).
We are really enjoying our rental digs.  There's my funny boy.
Books A Million here in Naples has a giant banner draped outside announcing Store Closing.
This is a sad thing.
I confess I felt like a vulture descending on some woe-begotten prey.  But I did it anyway.
I exercised restraint mostly only because my beloved said I wasn't allowed to buy another
suitcase to ship all the books back home.
*sigh*
The spoil-sport.  :)

Naples in Florida is now synonymous with knitting as well.  This is crow eating admission for me, having heckled my family & having protestith overmuch at the notion not even 3 years ago.
So I just want to say, in my effort to come clean and all, I started this all on my own
and even watched several online videos last week to jog my memory on how to knit
in a seamless round with two circular needles.
Grand-daughter Danielle picked out this skein of hot pink wool with candy coloured flecks
in the hopes that I would make her a beret.  Well. It's done my little Dee.
Tomorrow, I will attempt a few flowers to accessorize the hat in a manner that matches
the fun & flair of your personality!
To temper this dangerous amount of pride, I make special mention once again of my sister.
Let's face it, without her extraordinary long-suffering mentoring I'd be nowhere on the knitting scene.
And finally, I love spending this leisure time catching up on some reading, blogging and cooking,
...with wine of course.
Hey! Some recipes do call for it.

We enjoyed a birthday dinner with Lilly at The Bay House - famous in the area for its mind-boggling seafood menu.  We dined outside as the sun set and a nearby firepit substituted its warmth.  The waiter insisted we go inside to the crustacean bar to see the "beautiful" 8 pound crab available to a fearless diner.  Or was it 4pound beast suitable as appetizer for 8?  We can't seem to agree on the facts.  Another admirer put a 10 ounce glass in front of the shot for perspective.  CRUSTacean's are aptly named don't you think?

My mental health activity

After the wonderfully wild 'work' of Carols & Classics, I went into hibernation and assumed a cozy couch post knitting with my lovely sister.  Two whole weeks of wool, circular needles and navigating patterns while the rest of my family went to bat hosting various family gatherings... what a treat!
I even drove off TWICE to Mary Maxim in Paris, Ontario for supplies and against my previous vow, once on a Senior's Discount Tuesday. (evidently, time heals these wounds:)
Pictured above is the result of the first week:  known as felted slipper clogs - and modelled by my hubby for whom they were created.  He made a noble effort to contain his surprise and only cautiously suggested the likeness of Sasquatch ....
I know what you're thinking.
They're too big.  Right?
That's what you're thinking.
And of course, until you put the project thru a very hot water laundry cycle where they just kinda melt and felt... they ARE too big.
But AFTER that very hot water cycle? - Ta Da!
A tight ball of compressed wool emerges from the machine.  It is unfolded unto its full glory and the skeptics are silenced forevermore.
My beloved even had to wear them dampish like for a few hours to stretch them out a bit - just as my wunderbar knitting mentor/sister predicted.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but there's a glow happening here when I take time out
for knitting.  It has grown on me.
I find it
"soothing"
truth be told.
There.  I said it now.
And it didn't even hurt.

Some New Grand at Chesley

First of all, I forgot to mention how our Coffeehouse culminated, and it needs noting.
Nieces Heather and Emily had worked feverishly on knitting an afghan for Grandma in the hopes of presenting it to her with time enough to enjoy it.
That timely moment as you know, never materialized.
So instead...
It was their decision to present the blanket to her dearest friends in her memory.
The way this knitting parallel keeps springing up unexpectedly in the fabric of our lives leaves me with a great sense of wonder and gratitude.
Like being wrapped up in a comfortable sense of the mysterious :)
Uncle Bert and Aunt Arien?  We love you too...
Two days later, as if by way of divine confirmation that ALL of life at every stage, is safely in His hands, Pauline (& Gerry) became the fourth of Mom's children to be rewarded with the crown of grandparenthood!
Little Gideon Alexander arrived a month early and becomes the twelve great-grandchild in a growing family clan that continues to taste much undeserved goodness from a Faithful Father God.
Lindsay and Brad are the proud parents and are doing well.
The grand-parents are simply out of their minds with delight.
Yep.
We TOTALLY get it.
Is this little 6 pounder not the sweetest most alert preemie EVER???

The Knitting Thing Again....plus addendum

Here they are.
My first (and surely, ONLY) pair of socks made by my own hand.
What fun.  Seriously.
Competent knitter I am not, but still I enjoyed the process very much.
The thrill of accomplishment - the time it afforded me to simply sit quietly, creating * pondering * listening to music * OR best of all? * sharing comfortable conversation with those I love.
I was really hoping to have them done before Mom passed away, but I missed the mark by two weeks.
Not that it ever carried the threat of fret;  by now we've learned a thing or two about this truth:
All things in the appointed time.
I first wrote about the Master Weaver here,
the One who knits us together in our mother's wombs,
the One who charts our lives and
carries forth every purpose laid out for us
The One of whom it is said:  All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

I still can't fathom it all.  And it doesn't matter that I do.
I can simply marvel instead.  That does matter!

I post the following picture as proof that at my great age, I can be found practising the liberating skill of laughing at oneself more often.  It was a quiet evening in early December around Mom's kitchen table, (the table with the really poor lighting) a decent enough place for six dice, not so for knitting on 4mm slick turbo needles.
After fixing the umpteenth slipped stitch, my little sister ran off to her place (it's attached to moms granny suite).
'Probably pouring herself a good stiff drink' me thought :)
A unique thought to think about a teetotaller but, oh well.
'I hope she pours a stiff one for me too!' me thought again, more sensibly this time.

She soon reappeared and with a great guffaw (and no helpful libation in hand), affixed me with a miner's sort of headlamp to address the lighting issue.  She proceeded to play the iphone paparazzi and forwarded the end result.  It was a great moment of comic relief - I think we made enough noise to even rouse Mom's curiosity from the bedroom.
We've spent quite a bit of time there again - at Mom's place.
It's so comforting to be at her place, among the things of Mom.
I will write about that soon, but I can't just yet.

Drum Roll Please....

These pic's are posted to honour niece Nicole's request to see my knitting progress....

So here it is sweetie.  My first ever toe-up sock--- 4mm circular turbo needles attached (because I haven't gone shrieking yet to either of my nutty knitting savvy sisters to help me bind off!)
Nikki paid me a high compliment when she asked if I would help her out of her knitting glitch when she arrives for cousin Britt's wedding next month.
She's got a real sense of humour, that girl.  :)
I am honoured.
Totally incapable of course, but honoured none-the-less.
Advice for the recalcitrant:
You are never too old to learn a new trick.
I am living proof  --  leg cramps notwithstanding.

Pfft! and Pshaw!

Remember this picture?
It was part and parcel to my confessional blog entry about having to eat crow on the knitting thing.
WELL! I'm about to write my own I CAN'T BELIEVE version of a knitting experience....
I returned to Mary Maxim in Paris, Ontario this past Tuesday once again in the company of my sister Pauline. We went in for a few more supplies and some help about the provisional cast-on my sis did for me in the current project, which is a funky hat with pleats in the back.
It was Senior's Special Day.
We ambled through that store having to dodge slow moving walkers and their owners with various shades of gray - by the multitude! and that is not an exaggeration.
I was bored after a half hour and went to sit in my car and take messages on my cell phone.
My sister emerged with a triumphant smile and approached me at a somewhat urgent pace.
Before I could ask her about her obvious 'bag-less' state, she foisted her debit card on me and asked if I would go to the till and take advantage of the senior's discount on her behalf.
I stared in disbelief.
This was a joke right? Insensitive and ill-timed none-the-less.
....from my very beloved sister no-less.
But no.
Apparently, signing up for the 'Club 50' card could earn her a 20% savings.
I squelched down a rising disturbance.

Now I want you to understand that I really love my sister.
I would not have numbly followed her back into that store if that were not the case.
But you can sure bet that when the sudden attack of fuzziness to the brain cleared, I went full bore on a rant all the way home demanding to understand HOW a meager, insignificant, altogether inappropriate 20% savings could possibly make up for a 100% loss to my sense of worth and self-respect.

Oblivious to my wounded-ness, the cashier blithered on mindlessly about the new Club 50 being a big hit for drawing crowds.

My sister had the audacity to giggle.

I don't know, words like violation, devastation and despair come to mind.
Knitting suddenly brings GNARLY KNOTS to mind once again.
I pledge to never return to Mary Maxim without the company of my mother - or grandmother for that matter.
And never on a Tuesday.

She Eats Crow

I interrupt the regularly scheduled posting of our family breakaway to Washington DC for this important announcement. Are ya ready for this one?
It's a CONFESSION....and I am posting this primarily for the benefit of my niece Nicole Pts in Naples, my two sisters and my mom, whom have all played a direct role in this latest development....
Remember the knitting frenzy of November and the chiding you had to endure from me over the myriad side trips to Knitting Nancy's? (Okay, okay - not exactly myriad trips then).
Remember me yawning copiously on the beach pretending to be completely disinterested?

I came home, happily went about the recap of the memories for my blog using the theme of knitting (like a shameless fraud! :) and then - quite strangely, without explanation and before I even knew what was happening - went to visit sister Pauline with a reckless request to help me start a pair of slippers for my grandchildren.
Without skipping a beat, my sweet sister waltzed off to get a spare ball of wool, some needles and a do-able pattern.
What a generous act of faith and commitment on her part to tutor this skeptical proselyte!
I can only imagine how I looked making stabs at it with those things on my lap - I certainly felt like a quadriplegic.
As per typical, undoing many (okay, okay, MYRIAD then) ridiculous mistakes was part of the learning curve for me.
But here's the weird part: I actually enjoyed the process, humbling as it was. It took me far longer than average to get the job done but now, I can truly knit, purl, cast-on and bind-off with confidence! Not only that, but I felted these today and they actually shrunk to exactly the size I need for grand-daughter Juliana.
Please note the felted ankle flowers which mark the leg-warmer/slipper as right and left. (Puff and swell goes the chest)
Delight has trumped Disregard - and I have my beloved, eminently patient sister Pauline to thank for it. Here's to many more hours between us with conversation and the clicking of needles!

Next time we meet Nikki - I'll have my Fabric Art bag from Spun on the beach too!
Lessons learned?
You are never too old to learn something new.
Never scoff at the opportunity to learn a new trick - you may end up eating crow.
Like me. :)

In Naples with Nicole

You might want to pour yourself a coffee or glass of fine red wine. This is going to take quite a while. :)

I became thoroughly enamoured (uhm, addicted?) with the art of blogging while chronicling a dream vacation in England two summers ago. The trip was a gift from my hubby - who sent me along with our daughter Catherine to partake in the amazing C.S. Lewis conference Imago Dei.
Off to England became a way for my family back home to make a 'virtual journey' along with us in real time and stay connected in a manner not otherwise afforded. Reading, writing, journaling & photography all rolled into one wonderful new world of blogging?
I was hooked immediately and that is when the idea spawned itself to use such a means to find our long lost grand-daughter, niece & cousin.
This Pilgrim's Progress was launched a year ago today with that express purpose in mind so it is very fitting and far more than mere coincidence that I find myself putting up this particular blog post on the anniversary of that date. Don't ever tell me that our God isn't Awesome or that His timing isn't perfect.
Below is a portrait of our Nicole with her very fine and constant friend Jared. We are so thankful that you have each other Nicole - as if you don't already realize what a gift that is.
The thought of all that goodness was overwhelming me when I strolled down the Naples beach one afternoon to scribble your name at long last in the place of our meeting after a dozen years of forced estrangement. I still can't recall it all without moist eyes.
"Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? ...If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast."
excerpts from the amazing Psalm 139
The 'Ford Pacifica' SUV crossover reserved for us at the car rental joint looked more like a retired man's dream chariot, but oh well, it got us from point A to B in safety and comfort and I'll have to let it go and leave it at that. Grrr...

My precious sister Pauline sat across the aisle from me. She took the camera...
Alas.....photographer she is not!
Momsie and baby sister Catherine sat to my left. It was remarkable to share this adventure together; that Yvonne's mother and her three sisters should have the incredible honour of being the first to meet her little girl Nicole.
Waiting anxiously in the hotel lobby restaurant - looking for someone like Yvonne to grace us. Seeing you Nicole for the first time was surreal to say the least!
There's a classy strip on 5th Avenue down the road where we indulged in some ice-cream dessert amongst the glittering lights to finish our first evening together. It would be the first of many fellowship meals together that week. Nicole is very much her mom. I think my mom mistakenly called her Yvonne on the second day already! It felt shockingly natural to do so.
Round table from L-R: Pauline, Jared (what a sweetie!), Nicole, Catherine, Joanne, Mom.
After a few days, sister Cathy had the brilliant idea of soliciting the forces back home to broach the idea of surprising Nicole with a new laptop to replace her virus infected home computer and ensure that we would be able to enjoy continuing communication with her after we returned home. Using a nifty new tool of cyberspace called Skype - we'll be able to converse in video in real time! You can appreciate that our clan is completely committed to never losing touch with our little lost sheep ever again. Jared proved himself an invaluable accomplice to our scheme, meeting me at Best Buy on the sly to help pick out the perfect product while the others kept her busy at Knitting Nancy's. Yes.
Knitting Nancy.
Another interesting twist....
Not only did Nicole look and sound like her mom - she loves card games and games of every sort to boot! This was getting uncanny ... fitting like a glove here. Whew!
My mom gave Nicole her mommy's ring but we had to go to the local jeweller to get it sized for her daughter. I can't imagine that Yvonne wore this teeny thing on a ring finger but apparently she did. Mom also gave her the delicate gold necklace Yvonne had given to her on her last Christmas with us.
Before we left for Naples I bumped into Mom in town and she was telling me about this necklace (which I was unaware of) when mid-sentence she had to stop and dab her streaming eyes. It was a tender moment and made me keenly aware of the emotional toll even extreme happiness and excitement can have on ones heart.
"...all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."
Psalm 139:16 The Word we shared at Yvonne's funeral.
Feasting, family, fellowship. We did a whole lot of that at a wonderful restaurant chain known as The Cheesecake Factory. What a place. What a remarkable menu (and service!)
Apparently this food chain ships anywhere in the world -- too easy.
We definitely took some back home with us
but I fear it was on our hips by that time.
Well maybe not. We made a valiant effort to walk off some of Chris' Outrageous Chocolate Cake (or was that Craig's Crazy Carrot Cheesecake?) by pledging to rise early every morning and do our paces along the beach. But how serious can one be with these two constantly goofing off at every opportunity. *sigh* It's tuff being the older mature one, but someone's got to do it!
Looking out on our breakfast nook to the private beach area beyond, I won't say it was worth a twelve year wait but it sure was a nice spot to be finishing!
At Nicole's suggestion, we went to the local zoo. It was a beautiful day once again and the zoo was surprisingly well-stocked with a great variety of animals to marvel. Nicole loves animals (always did to our recollection) and hopes one day to secure a job working
with animals in some capacity. We'd recommend this outing to anyone venturing into Florida.
Yay! I am an incurable reader of signs when I go into museums and such. It means I am always lagging behind the others and usually getting lost in the moment. But I've always figured that doing so means I'm getting the most 'bang for my buck' and this sign neatly proves my point. I feel vindicated.
I've also lost the others again and must now eat crow to catch up! :)
Please observe below, the perfectly pink Puff flowers. A classic line from the Anne of Green Gables film comes to mind ... when she goos over a dress with enormous sleeves that the ever indulgent Matthew has blown the family budget on: 'The puffiest ever!"
Ever since meeting Aslan in C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia - I have been smitten with the King of the jungle... my favourite line? "He's not safe but He is Good!"
Have I mentioned that we're all tree lovers? Even the lone dead one spiking high above the others in this marshland can be picturesque, don't you agree?
What can I say? This particular tree had us all agog. We're tree people remember? and have been in the nursery business for six decades.
This mammoth specimen is a fig tree aka a banyan tree whose branches produce aerial roots which in turn become accessory trunks. A mature tree may cover several acres in this manner.
Several acres? Can you imagine it?
We had to stand altogether in one of course, to demonstrate it's size.
It could hold one heck of a tree-fort, that's for sure.
I can't help it Nicole. It's like looking at the four sisters together again....

Took a river cruise to circle round the isle of monkeys.

Magnificent creature, this one.

Slightly less intimidating creature, this one.

I like black bears, especially from the safer side of the chain link fence. But there is something sad about a perpetually caged bear.

Here's looking at you kid!

Remember our pledge to get up early for power walks on the beach? - an attempt to put some distance between us and Craig's Crazy Carrot Cake?
The sand wall caved and yeah - it confirmed a thing or two.

The place we called home for five days - (six actually :)
Boxed lunches from you know what place down the road.... Yum. Again.
Nicole is looking at my zoo pictures on my laptop under her towel tent. LOL
Mom treated us to Pina Coladas on the beach. Spiked no less!
Was this woman in the mood to celebrate or what??
Chicken salad sandwiches ... *sigh* ... hey! do we have any Cheesecake Factory's in Canada?
Mom, Nicole, Cathy and Pauline made up the crazy knitting bee contingent. Me? I watched warily from afar.
I texted my hubby - yawned copiously and went into the waves, except...
I packed everything.
Everything but the bathing suit.
*sigh*
Down the road at the now famous restaurant of choice....Nicole introduced us to Thai Wraps. I know this is getting to be a ridiculously nauseous theme but, YUM. Again.

We said our goodbyes and took the shuttle to the airport. Seems our plane was overbooked by twenty seats unbeknownst to us and an interesting little twist of circumstances ensued....
We wound up at a hotel again. Yep. And here we are - Four small minds riding the elevators and taking pic's of ourselves doing so. I think that ceiling mirror needs a Norwex cloth Sarah. (sorry, that's an inside scoop)
Yes indeed. We actually 'missed' our flight home. And we didn't even try! (seriously, we didn't).
The Holiday Inn down the road from the airport was spanking brand new and boasted a beautiful outdoor sitting area complete with a fire-pit. But, an extra day in the sun wasn't too hard a sacrifice to make and the bonus? Nicole and Jared came out to meet us at the Miromar Outlet Shopping Centre. :)
No. We did not do it on purpose.
But do we appear upset by this?
The 'knitting on the beach' story will unfold yet when I return to this post but for now, I have to get some sleep! I vaguely recall, knit one, purl one and something about uh? circular needles?
I dunno. Maybe I'll have to get one of my sisters to recall the facts. :)
So I was the lone outsider in the knitting thing. I took the pictures. That has to count for something.

Nicole's project. A vintage Class A Felted purse.
Pauline's project. A funky Class A felted purse WITH felted flowers no less. Oh, and a lime green zipper that she hand sewed into the top.
I think you've outdone yourself girl.
Hey Cath? Where's your project anyway?
Aren't you the one who started this whole knitting frenzy?
As someone here has already suggested, this blog post isn't about a happy ending.
It's about a new beginning. There is much yet to discover about each other. Being able to journey forward TOGETHER however, is now a reality - a very precious gift that we will not take for granted. We have enormous gratitude for:
  • your dad Brian (& Hildy!) for the courage and grace he showed in facilitating our reunion
  • cousin Bryan for sending you the blog link on a 'whim'
  • you and Jared for your enthusiasm to host four perfect strangers from Canada with equal amounts of pizzaz and grace
  • God Almighty Who ultimately has the whole fabric of our lives already worked out and yet allows each of us to play a role as He knits and weaves us together.
Remember this always Nicole:
He knit you together in your mother's womb. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. Psalm 139: 13,14

And we love you very much.
